The chapter has a display consisting of a three part display board,
a combination TV/VCR, a stuffed Ring-necked Pheasant, and a bird-related quiz board. Any or all of
these items may appear at local environmental activities. We sometimes
also make presentations at local events. Some of
our recent or upcoming appearances:
October 9, 2010: GAAS will have a table at the Oct 9 "Fall Into Nature" event at Bath Nature Preserve, 12-5.
June 23, 2010: The presentation by Joyce Pelz on "How to Attract Birds to your Healthy Lawn" at Wadsworth Public Library was cancelled. It will be rescheduled for a later date.
June 20, 2010: The display was at the Buckeye MartinFest organized by the Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association at the Kiwanis Center in the Portage Lakes. It was also the first appearance of the stuffed ring-necked pheasant.
March 23, 2010: Mark Purdy presented "Birding in the Akron Area" to Boy Scout Troop 511 at Granger United Methodist Church in Medina County. The scouts are in the 5th to 9th grades and they are working on their animal tracking merit badge.
March 6, 2010: Joyce Pelz presented "Backyard Birdwatching" at Dayton Nurseries. See Backyard Birdwatching for more details.
October 3, 2009: UA and Bath Nature Preserve had a "Year of the River Stream Restoration Celebration & UA Field Station Open House". There were two Audubon posters as well as bird checklist handouts.
April 16, 2009: The display was at the Earth Day at the University of Akron from 11 to 2.
April 27, 2008: The display was at the Green Faire held by Unitarian Universalist Church.
April 16, 2008: The display was at the Earth Day at the University of Akron from 10 to 3.
February 16, 2008: At 11:00am, Joyce Pelz presented "Our Backyard Birds" at Donzell's Flower and Garden Center.
April 25, 2007: 10 to 1, in the Student Union on the campus of The University of Akron to celebrate Earth Day. Many other environmentally oriented organizations and companies participated including SASWMA, Akron Zoo, Mustard Seed Market, akron Regional Air Quality Management District, Ohio EPA, MetroParks Serving Summit County, Crown Point, and the Sierra Club.
April 14, 2007: 12 noon to 2 p.m., at Buchtel Commons on the campus of The University of Akron, Summit County citizens joined communities across the country to participate in what was likely the largest rallies held in the United States on global warming. The Akron rally is one of 1,300 (and counting) rallies held across the country by Step It Up 2007 , a national grassroots initiative seeking legislative action to reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
March 15, 2007: The Hudson Garden Club at Laurel Lake Retirement Community will host Joyce Pelz speaking on "Creating Healthy Yards for our Feathered Friends". Meetings open at 7pm with coffee and dessert and social time. Meeting begins at 7:30 and are open to the public and free.
February 17, 2007: Joyce Pelz presented "Attracting Birds and Wildlife To Your Healthy Lawn" at Donzell's Flower and Garden Center.
February 6, 2007: Joyce Pelz presented "Healthy Lawn and Landscapes for Wildlife" at the Mt. Zion/ Bath Gardeners club. The meeting was held at the Bath United Church of Christ on West Bath Rd near the Police Station.
