2008 Garlic Mustard Pulls
The first Garlic Mustard Pull of 2008 was held on Saturday, April 12 starting at 1:00.
The pull involved students from the Department of Biology at the University
of Akron led by Dr. Randy Mitchell, members of the Greater Akron Audubon Society and one neighbor of the Preserve. We met at
the main parking area near the Ira Road entrance to the Preserve. Bringing gloves, waterproof shoes, a hat, and water were very important
since the conditions were chilly and wet. Fortunately there wasn't much rain to "dampen" our spirits :>)
The turnout was excellent - I didn't get an exact count, but it was on the order of 14 or 15.
Open House
The University of Akron Field Station will host its Annual Open House on Saturday, September 22 from 10 am - 2 pm.
Come join us and "Discover Bath Nature Preserve!" There will be activities for all ages, highlighted by guest
speaker, Larry Rosche. Larry is the author of "A field guide to warblers of North America," "Birds of the
Cleveland region," "Dragonflies and damselflies of northeast Ohio," and more. He will speak on "The art of
flight." For more information, please visit our webpage at Field Station.
Purple Martin Houses
The chapter recently donated $125 toward the construction of Purple Martin houses at the Bath Baseball Park on Everett
Road. The work was done by Matt Gerberich, as part of an Eagle Scout project (Troop 385, Bath Township.)
According to Matt, our donation helped buy concrete, a 15' telescoping pole, 12 martin gourds, a predator guard, a
feeder tray, and a perching station. Although not in the Bath Nature Preserve, the houses are nearby. Some photos of the
boxes can be seen below. You can click on an image to open a larger window of that picture.
2007 Garlic Mustard Pulls
We held one pull on Saturday, April 21 with students from the Department of Biology at the University
of Akron led by Dr. Randy Mitchell. We will hold another pull on Sunday, April 29 starting at 1:00. Be sure
to bring gloves, waterproof shoes, a hat, and water!
2006 Garlic Mustard Pull
There will be a Garlic Mustard pull at the Bath Nature Preserve on April 29,
1-4pm. Randy Mitchell of the Department of Biology at The University of Akron
is organizing the event. Meet at the parking lot; transportation to the
affected areas will be provided. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather and
ground conditions. Don't forget your work gloves!
2005 Garlic Mustard Pulls
There will be two garlic mustard pulls at the Bath Nature Preserve in April, both Saturdays
of April 9 and 16. Volunteers should meet at the BNP trailhead (off of Ira Road) at 1pm. Wear
gear appropriate for the conditions!
Wood Duck Nesting Box Cleaning
On 2/27/05, a team of Akron Audubon volunteers (Jack Monegan, Marc Nolls, Lew Monegan &
Mike Edgington [left to right in attached photo],
and Mark Purdy) went to Bath Nature
Preserve and serviced the Wood Duck nesting boxes. The boxes were installed as part
of an Eagle Scout project 2 or 3 years ago, but have not been maintained since.
Dr. Randy Mitchell of The University of Akron Department of Biology asked Audubon to help.
The team checked structural
integrity of the six boxes, emptied the old nest material, and re-filled the boxes with
fresh wood chips/shavings. The team plans to establish a monitoring schedule so that
useage and nesting success can be determined. More on this topic later in the
Spring!
